The sun rises and sets, and within that reliable routine comes how our bodies run. Our metabolisms run the way our day naturally goes. You metabolism starts to climb when you get up around 6-7am. It continues to ascend until the peak of the sun around 1pm; then has a dip in the afternoon (between 2-5pm) when you feel like you want a nap. Your body then picks up the pace once more for supper between the hours of 5-9pm. After 9pm your metabolism goes lower and lower until its lowest point between 2-5am.

So what does all of that mean? In the most basic terms, it means that you can pretty much eat whatever you want for breakfast and lunch because that is when your metabolism is burning at its best. Chances are very good that your body will use whatever energy you feed it for energy rather than store it as fat. It also means that your body very naturally has a dip in the afternoon. This is when we tend to use sugar and caffeine to drive up our energy. You are much better off to try and get as many nutrients into your day until 1pm so that your body has substantial energy during this time. Having more fat and protein in the mornings will help you to bypass this afternoon slump with much more ease. In the evenings, it is best to have a smaller dinner full of nutrients so you don’t feel the urge to snack in the evening. It is hard not to snack in the evenings but it is best to stop eating approximately 3 hours before bedtime so that your body can use your sleep to heal, recover and process from your day, rather than digest more food.
